Sandi DuBowski

Sandi DuBowski is a Jewish-American director, producer, and activist. He is internationally acclaimed for his documentaries that explore marginalized groups within Judaism and the intersection of faith and contemporary political conflict.

DuBowski’s most celebrated works include the award-winning documentary Trembling before G-d, which offered a groundbreaking look at the lives of LGBTQ individuals within Orthodox Judaism. His latest project, Sabbath Queen, follows the twenty-year journey of radical Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie. His career is dedicated to breaking silences and promoting diversity within religious communities through film, earning him recognition as a leading figure in contemporary Jewish documentary cinema.

DuBowski extends his artistic lens to the critique of Israeli occupation policies. He is a steadfast supporter of progressive Jewish groups such as JVP and IfNotNow, frequently calling attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza at film festivals and public forums. He maintains that a Jewish artist’s responsibility is to “witness injustice” rather than blindly endorse state narratives. He once stated: “As a filmmaker who has spent a career excavating the soul of Judaism, I cannot look away from the dispossession taking place. Our faith demands that we seek truth, even when that truth is painful for our own community.” He uses his platform to amplify the voices of anti-occupation Jewish and Palestinian artists.
