Prof. Lee Mordechai is a prominent Israeli Jewish historian and Associate Professor of History (with tenure) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A former postdoctoral research fellow with the Princeton Climate and Livelihood Initiative (BCLI) at Princeton University, he is an internationally recognized expert in environmental history, historical climatology, and pre-modern disaster studies. Beyond his historical paradigms, Mordechai has emerged as a vanguard dissident intellectual within Israel, leveraging his expertise in data synthesis to empirically document the structural destruction of civilian life and infrastructure in Palestine.
During the catastrophic escalations of the conflict between 2023 and 2026, Mordechai undertook a monumentally high-risk intellectual project: compiling and continuously synthesizing vast empirical datasets on the destruction of Gaza. He authored and self-published exhaustive, hundreds-of-pages-long reports detailing the hyper-calculated collapse of Gaza’s medical centers, the systemic demolition of its entire university infrastructure, and civilian casualties. Because of their hyper-rigorous, non-ideological, and verified methodology, his reports became crucial evidentiary pillars utilized by international human rights bodies.
Operating from the geographic center of state power in Jerusalem, Mordechai faced intense domestic blowback. He became the target of targeted doxxing campaigns, aggressive right-wing student groups, and political demands for the revocation of his tenure. Undeterred, he used institutional academic freedom frameworks to stand his ground, asserting that a university’s absolute loyalty belongs to empirical truth, not the narrative survival of a military administration.
