Reuben Binns is a Jewish computer scientist, Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, artificial intelligence ethicist, and data privacy expert based in the United Kingdom. He holds a faculty position in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford, paired with a fellowship at St Cross College. Binns’s interdisciplinary research centers on algorithmic fairness, explainable AI (XAI), and the technical enforcement of data protection legal frameworks (such as GDPR). Between 2018 and 2020, he was seconded to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) as its inaugural AI Fellow, leading the drafting of national artificial intelligence data protection guidance.
Since 2023, he has repeatedly used social media to express his opposition to the genocide in Gaza and has co-signed open letters and statements in support of campus protests.
