Bernard Sufrin

Bernard Sufrin is a British computer scientist, Emeritus Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford, and Emeritus Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford. For decades, he served as a faculty member and tutor in the Oxford University Computing Laboratory (now the Department of Computer Science). His research focuses on formal methods in software engineering, the specification and design of the Z notation, functional programming, concurrent computation models, and programming language theory.

Sufrin has also engaged with public policy issues and academic freedom within higher education, frequently joining collective statements in support of Palestinian human rights and political advocacy. In 2024, he co-signed “An Open Letter from Concerned Jewish Faculty at the University of Oxford.”

In 2026, Sufrin co-signed the statement “The Metropolitan Police must not favour the far right over Palestine,” which criticized decision-making regarding political demonstrations in London: “We are appalled to hear that the Metropolitan Police have refused permission for the Palestine movement to march to commemorate Nakba day on 16 May on its proposed route and instead given over the political centre of London to a hate march called by racist thug ‘Tommy Robinson’ in response. …We call on the police to immediately reverse this shameful decision.”
