Toby Marlow

Toby Marlow is a rising star in the contemporary British theater scene. They are a composer, lyricist, and actor. Raised in a Jewish family in London, Marlow studied English literature at Cambridge University, where they met their primary creative collaborator, Lucy Moss. Marlow identifies as non-binary (and uses they/them pronouns).

Marlow co-created the musical “SIX” with Lucy Moss while at university. The show, which reinterprets the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII as a modern pop concert, debuted at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017 before transferring to London’s West End and Broadway. In 2022, Marlow and Moss won the Tony Award for Best Original Score, making Marlow the first openly non-binary recipient of a Tony Award in that category. The duo subsequently wrote the West End musical “Why Am I So Single?”, which premiered at the Garrick Theatre in 2024.

In May 2025, Marlow was one of the key signatories to “Courage and Care: Guidelines on confronting antisemitism and censorship in the arts,” a resource drafted by UK Jewish cultural workers. The document provided guidance for arts institutions to distinguish between actual antisemitism and political speech regarding Israel and Palestine, advocating against the censorship of Palestinian symbols and anti-Zionist artistic expressions. Marlow is also one of the signatories of the 2025 public statement, “Global Jewish Call on the UN and World Leaders to Sanction Israel.”
