Professor Brian Butterworth is a world-renowned British Jewish cognitive neuropsychologist and Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London (UCL). He is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) and a leading global authority on the “mathematical brain” and dyscalculia.
He is one of the first scholars globally to systematically study dyscalculia, developing the first diagnostic screening tools and influencing educational policies worldwide. His seminal work, The Mathematical Brain, proposed that humans are born with an innate “number module.” His recent work, Can Fish Count?, extends this research into evolutionary biology and animal cognition. At UCL, he has founded several influential journals and worked extensively to translate lab findings into educational reforms for children with learning disabilities.
He co-signed several statements related to Independent Jewish Voices.
