Ezra Furman

Ezra Furman is a prominent Jewish-American musician, singer-songwriter, and trans woman. She is internationally acclaimed in the pop and rock scene for her high-tension punk-rock style, profound lyrics, and unique interpretations of Jewish theology.

Furman’s albums, such as Transangelic Exodus and Twelve Nudes, have received immense critical acclaim. She also composed much of the soundtrack for the hit series Sex Education. Beyond her musical success, Furman is an observant Jew currently attending rabbinical school. She excels at weaving queer identity and marginality with esoteric Torah scripture in her work, creating a cultural landscape that is both spiritual and rebellious.

Furman is a steadfast defender of Palestinian rights on social media and on stage. She views her support for the Palestinian liberation movement as a direct fulfillment of the core Jewish commandment to “pursue justice.” She frequently participates in JVP actions and wears symbols of solidarity during her performances. She once wrote: “Studying Torah every day only deepens my conviction: the atrocities against the Palestinian people are a desecration of the Divine image. Our religious rituals are meaningless if we remain indifferent to the suffering of our neighbors. Anti-Zionism is not just a political choice; it is a requirement of dignity and truth within my faith.” She uses her platform as a trans artist to highlight the intersectionality between various oppressed groups.
