Harvey Goldstein

1939–2020

Harvey Goldstein was a renowned British statistician, Fellow of the British Academy, and Professor of Social Statistics at the University of Bristol and UCL.

He was a pioneer of Multilevel Modeling, a statistical method used to understand complex social structures. His work transformed how researchers analyze educational performance and social inequality.

Growing up in a left-wing Jewish family, Goldstein was a fierce critic of the “weaponization” of antisemitism. He provided statistical evidence to challenge narratives about institutional antisemitism in the UK Labour Party and was a vocal opponent of the IHRA definition of antisemitism, arguing it stifled legitimate criticism of Israel. He was also an outstanding member of the Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL).

His passing due to COVID-19 in 2020 is deeply saddening.
