Leora Abelson

Rabbi Leora Abelson is an American rabbi, community organizer, and spiritual guide based in Boston. As an openly queer and non-binary individual, Abelson was ordained at Hebrew College. Abelson is dedicated to finding space for marginalized groups within traditional law, reshaping Judaism into a locus of inclusive and radical care.

In terms of professional achievements, Abelson is noted for their leadership at Nehar Shalom Community Synagogue in Boston, a congregation renowned for its commitment to social justice and multiracial solidarity. Beyond their pastoral role, Abelson is an active participant in prison abolition and racial justice movements. By linking Jewish concepts like Shmita (Sabbatical year) and atonement with modern abolitionist theory, they have successfully established a faith-based hub for grassroots movements in the Boston area.

Rabbi Abelson is a steadfast voice within the academic and religious spheres supporting Palestinian rights, serving as a member of Rabbis for Ceasefire and JVP Rabbinical Council. They firmly believe that the core tenets of Judaism demand opposition to all forms of oppression, including the occupation of Palestine. One of their most representative statements is: “The God I believe in does not want a ‘safety’ for us that is built on the suffering of others.” Abelson has participated in numerous non-violent direct actions to protest military aid and publicly calls on the Jewish community to reflect on the tensions between Zionism and racial justice, insisting that “Never Again” must apply to all suffering peoples.
