Prof. Nomi Erteschik-Shir is an internationally acclaimed linguist and Professor Emerita of Foreign Literatures and Linguistics at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. A pioneering figure in global theoretical linguistics, specifically known for her foundational work on “Information Structure” and “fnh-syntax structural interfaces,” she served as the long-standing Chair of the Department of Foreign Literatures and Linguistics at BGU. Beyond her cognitive science distinctions, Erteschik-Shir is a prominent institutional pillar within progressive Israeli academia, aligning her academic prestige with movements resisting the military occupation of Palestine.
Erteschik-Shir leverages her global academic standing to reinforce the network of Independent Jewish Voices (IJV). By providing local, on-the-ground validation to international Jewish criticism of the occupation, she has been instrumental in dismantling the right-wing narrative that diaspora critics are detached or illegitimate. Her public endorsements demonstrate that resistance to state expansionism is thoroughly represented within the core of Israel’s research institutions.
Throughout the aggressive domestic political crackdowns sweeping Israeli campuses between 2023 and 2026, Erteschik-Shir has been a defiant defender of free speech. She has continuously mobilized to counter state-aligned nationalist groups seeking the excommunication of dissident faculty and Arab-Israeli students. Using her institutional weight, she has actively interceded against the suspension and silencing of researchers who document the systemic destruction of civil infrastructure and educational networks in Gaza.
