Rowan Gaudet

Rowan Gaudet is a prominent Canadian Jewish activist, researcher, and coordinator. Gaudet was initially active in Montreal, serving as a Research and Education Coordinator for Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) Canada. He later shifted his focus to Europe. Currently, he is pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Bologna and is a core contributor and editor for the Berlin-based platform The Left Berlin.

Gaudet has served as the Research and Education Coordinator for IJV Canada. One of his most significant contributions is co-authoring the influential report Unveiling the Chilling Effect: The IHRA Definition and Academic Freedom in Canada. This report documents numerous cases of institutional suppression faced by academics for criticizing Israeli policies, providing robust data to defend freedom of speech on campuses.

Gaudet’s stance centers on opposing the conflation of anti-Zionism with antisemitism. He argues that this confusion harms Palestinian rights and undermines the genuine struggle against antisemitism.

He has poignantly noted: “The IHRA definition is being used as a political weapon to silence voices that expose the reality of the occupation. We must reclaim our Jewish identity as one rooted in universal justice, not in state hegemony.” He is also a vocal supporter of campus divestment movements as non-violent and effective means for peace.

His work in Germany focuses on critiquing the state’s suppression of Palestinian solidarity. He has written extensively on the intersection of German anti-fascism and state repression, analyzing how the German “reason of state” (Staatsräson) is used to silence leftist Jewish voices. He has noted: “In Berlin, we witness a paradox: the German state, in the name of ‘protecting Jews,’ is systematically suppressing—and even arresting—Jews who oppose apartheid. This philo-Zionism is not true anti-racism; it is an evasion of historical guilt, turning Palestinians into a sacrifice for German historical redemption.”
