Sam Weinstein

Sam Weinstein was born into a Jewish family with deep roots in radical traditions and class consciousness. As a veteran trade unionist and revolutionary socialist, his identity is firmly built around “Jewish internationalism.” He rejects the confinement of Jewish identity to a nationalist narrative, viewing it instead as a historical responsibility to stand with the global oppressed, particularly the working class. Weinstein is a founding member and leading officer of Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) and a key figure in the UK branch of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN).

In his professional life, Weinstein is a stalwart defender of the British labor movement. He served for years as a senior official in the Communication Workers Union (CWU), earning widespread respect for his work in protecting workers’ rights and leading anti-privatization campaigns. Beyond union organizing, he is a profound political commentator and writer, frequently contributing to leftist outlets like the Morning Star. His greatest achievement lies in his role as a theoretician; through countless lectures and essays, he has clarified the fundamental distinction between the socialist roots of Jewish tradition and modern Zionist politics.

Weinstein is one of the sharpest voices in the UK challenging the “weaponization of antisemitism.” He steadfastly opposes the conflation of criticism of Israeli policy with antisemitism and has engaged in a long-standing struggle with the Labour Party leadership on this issue. During the Gaza crisis of 2024–2025, he was not only an organizer of mass protests but also an active participant in “Workers Against the Arms Trade” actions targeting factories supplying weapon parts to Israel.

Demonstrating high political acuity and principle, he noted in a public statement: “Equating Zionism with Jewish identity is not only a distortion of history but a threat to the safety of Jewish people worldwide.” At a 2025 Labour Party forum, he remained undeterred by pressure, stating: “As a Jewish trade unionist, I will never allow my name to be used to whitewash the collective punishment of the Palestinian people. True Jewish dignity lies in opposing occupation and standing with the people of Gaza and the West Bank.
